After World War ll, a huge effort was made in mosquito control, and so dengue virtually disappeared from Florida. However, it remained endemic throughout large portions of the rest of the world.

In 2009, there was a dengue fever outbreak in Key West. Despite the fact that there had been an absense of dengue in Florida, it was still rampant in the Carribean and parts of South America. Many people visit parts of the Carribean from Key West by boat, and the most probable reason for the reemurgence of dengue at this time was that it was brought up from one of the Carribean islands.

In 1922, there was a series of dengue fever outbreaks in Miami, Tallahasse, and Jacksonville. During the early 1920s, Florida experienced a real estate boom, and a huge influx of new residents and tourists flooded in to the costal cities to take advantage of the sun and the beach.

In 2013, there was another large outbreak of dengue fever in Martin County, Florida. Throughout the 21st century, tourisum has been increasing dramatically from year to year. This influx of people from all over the world, including parts of the world still ravaged by dengue fever, including parts of the Carribean and South America, led to the reemurgence of disease in Florida.
